The Koonung Woodturners Guild would like to welcome you to their home page and give you some insight into our club’s activities.
Who We Are:
The Guild has been providing an informal and friendly environment for woodturners since 1994 and aims to promote friendship between woodturners, sharing of knowledge and excellence in woodturning quality and design.
The Guild is situated at the Koonung Cottage Community House, 109 Koonung Road, Blackburn North. The Guild is open to both men and women and gives all members the opportunity to learn basic and involved woodturning techniques.
The Guild supports a number of community projects including making wood turned toys which are donated to Charities for under privileged children. Members also demonstrate woodturning skills at public events such as the Whitehorse Spring Festival Day and Schwerkolt Cottage Open Day.
Meetings:
Guild members meet regularly on every fourth Saturday of the month from 9am to 12pm at the Koonung Cottage. Usually a short meeting is followed by ‘show & tell’, where members work is displayed and discussed. A raffle is held and morning tea provides an opportunity for members to mix socially.
The second half of the meeting consists of either a demonstration on a particular aspect of turning by an expert, a guest speaker or a ‘hands on’ activity which involves all members in a turning activity.
A regular discussion evening is held each Monday night at the cottage at 7.45pm for those members who wish to have their pieces examined by other Guild members who may give constructive suggestions and provide advice on turning techniques and design.
On Thursday afternoons there is an instruction class which is given free of tuition charges to any new or interested member. Each session runs from 12.45pm to 3.00pm and are held at the Koonung Cottage where the Guild has exclusive use of a shed which contains a number of working lathes as well as a great deal of other equipment.
On Wednesday afternoons a workshop session is held where members can turn projects of their own design in a relaxed and informal environment. These sessions are for the more advanced turners as training is not provided although assistance and advice is always available if required.
